While it is more on the pricier side, the build quality, high-end materials and performance justify it. This kart features a 169 cc single cylinder 4-stroke petrol engine that achieves a max power of 7,500 rpm. This is quite a power engine for off-road go-karting, capable of speed of up to 37 mph (60 km/h).

It’s also fully equipped with a belt drive and chain drive and has a 63.8” (162 cm) wheel base, which is fairly large compared to others. A ground clearance of 7.9″ (20cm) and soft rubber wheels enable you to travel across any surface area in a breeze. The back of the kart features a storage tray and a full-size spare wheel. Additionally, you’ll also find quite a fair amount of extra features such as headlights, tail lights, three roof-mounted fog lights, conveniently located hand-grips and much more.

The Motor HQ DF200-GKA requires minor assembly upon delivery. You will need to assemble around 20% of the components by yourself, due to the size of the kart. However, you won’t need to worry because it comes with easy-to-read instructions and a tool kit.

The Motor HQ DF125-GKA feels like the smaller brother of the DF200-GKA, as it’s equipped with very similar features, but has a less powerful engine. It also doesn’t have the back storage tray that its bigger brother has. A great feature is also the smooth automatic transmission (3+N+R) and the heavy duty suspension that dampens the impact while driving across uneven surfaces.

4. ScooterX Sport Kart

The ScooterX Sport Kart is an extremely versatile off-road go-kart that is capable of hitting 45 mph (72.4 km/h). That’s insane for such a small machine! It features a powerful 196 cc (6.5 hp) 4-stroke petrol engine that is mounted at the back of the kart, just behind the seat. The fuel tank is only 0.53 gal (2 l), but it will still give you about a 20 – 30 miles (33.2 km – 48.3 km) of range. 

While it sits fairly low on the ground, its 13″ x 6.5″ (33 cm x 16.5 cm), dual-coil shocks and knobby tires make it ideal for light off-road usage. It’s not equipped with any roll cage and lights. The speed throttle and braking trigger are mounted to the steering wheel and may need some getting used to. But with limited space on it’s 66″ x 38″ x 28″ frame, it’s the right choice. 5. Trailmaster XRX 300

The Trailmaster XRX 300 is a high speed off-road go-kart that is equipped with at whopping 17.4hp petrol engine (300 cc) that outputs a max power of 6,500 rpm. The top speed of this kart is an astonishing 50 mph (80.5 km/h), enabling it to climb steep surfaces at an 18 degree angle. Due to its high top speed and large engine displacement, this off- road kart is only recommended for adults.

Additionally, it features front and rear hydraulic brakes and a dual wheel drive suspension that feels fairly soft across uneven surfaces. The dashboard is kept quite simple with a key insert, light switches and a speedometer. The Trailmaster XRX 200 is a smaller and stripped down version of XRX 300. It’s a mid-sized off-road kart that is ideal for kids and youths. The kart features an EPA certified 4-stroke engine that is air-cooled. With a displacement of 200 cc and a max power of 3,600 rpm it delivers sufficient power to have fun across all types of surfaces, as it reaches speeds of up to 31 mph (50 km/h). 

As it is the light version of the XRX 300, the Trailmaster XRX 200 comes with basic headlights, a rear storage tray, seat belts, oil-damped shocks and various other features. Do note that it does not have a reverse gear. The well-padded seats also come with a safety belt and a steel roll cage. Dubbed as the smaller brother of the XRX 200, the Trailmaster XRS 200 is a slightly smaller version, which is designed for youths and manages to deliver a great off-road experience. It comes with at single cylinder 6.5 hp petrol engine, which has a displacement of 200 cc. 

It comes with plenty of features such as a roll cage with a canopy top. There’s also a storage tray at the back of the seats which is ideal for a tool box or traveling bags. Each wheel has a fender and features a heavy-duty suspension system that delivers excellent impact absorption for all kinds of off-road surfaces. Some may find the ride a little too bumpy. 

The Trailmaster XRS 200 also comes with a 5-point safety belt and side bars to ensure that you are well protected. It’s also important to mention that the padded seats are extremely comfortable. 

9. SXMOTO 49CC

Another noteworthy lightweight, yet powerful off-road go-kart is the SXMOTO 49CC. With a 2-stroke EPA approved petrol engine, this little beast reaches a maximum speed of 30 mph (48 km/h). It’s a great kart for light off-road racing due to its 9” (22.9 cm) ground clearance and 8” (20.3 cm) knobby tires.

Due to its small size (52” x 30” x 14”) this off-road kart does not have a roll cage or storage area. Although the seat only offers lumbar support, it does feature a seat belt that goes around your waist. The engine and the fuel tank are both mounted at the back of the seat area. You’ll also find that this small racer does not have any foot pedals. All steering, acceleration and breaking functions are found on the handle bar and are controlled with your hands. As the handlebars are mounted at a very low position, they are designed to go below your knees.

While the sitting position and steering mechanism can take some time to get used to, it’s still an extremely fun off-road go-kart for teenagers (aged 13+) and adults.

The FitRight Off-Road Go-Kart is an interesting addition to this list, as it features an electric motor, instead of a petrol engine. The powerful 48 volt 1000 watt motor delivers exciting speeds and extremely quick acceleration. There are three levels of speed settings: 10 mph (16.1 km/h), 15 mph (24.1 km/h) and 20 mph (32.2 km/h). 

Due to its small size, it’s ideal for kids aged 13 years and older. Even though it’s small, this off-road kart definitely packs a punch and is well equipped with features. It has a chain drive transmission, a padded steering wheel, a roll bar that is located at the back of the seat, an adjustable seat with seat belt and hydraulic brakes. Although the speed is regulated with settings, adult supervision and proper safety equipment is always recommended. 

Buying Guide: How to Choose Off-Road Go-Karts

As you can tell, there are plenty of off-road go-karts on the market each having its own set of features and benefits. There is no single best off-road go-kart out there and each kart has many different aspects that need to address what is most important for you.

In order to make your purchasing decision easier, I’ve created a list of seven considerations. I’ve listed these aspects below and they will help you make a more informed decision. These aspects include power, seat capacity, features, safety, age group, price and design. Let’s take a look!

Power (Petrol Engine vs Electric Motor)

Off-road go-karts typically come with either a gas-powered engine, or an electric motor. A gas-powered or petrol engine works through internal combustion and requires petrol. Off-road karts with a combustion engine are usually 2-stroke or 4-stroke with a single cylinder that is air-cooled. It’s common to see them having displacements of 80 cc to about 300 cc. While these engines are rather loud, they also emit fumes and can burn petrol quickly. However, compared to electric motors, they do have a range advantage which can be critical for off-road racing, as you aren’t really near any roads or landmarks.

An electric motor on the other hand is usually a brushless motor that requires a power-supply, which is most often a lead-acid battery that is mounted on the frame. The advantage of an electric motor is that you have better weight distribution, as these motors are much lighter compared to petrol engines. They also require less maintenance, have less parts and emit no fumes, therefore being environmentally friendlier. They’re downside is the low range and that’s the reason why you see them more often in smaller off-road karts or for low-power off-road go-karts that are designed for kids. Let’s take a look at the summary below.

Seat Capacity

The seat capacity can vary between off-road go-karts. Common seating capacities are 1 Seat, 2 Seats or 4 Seats. You’ll find that off-road karts for kids are usually 1-seaters, whereas youth and adults go-karts are designed with 2 seats. There are also family off-road karts that have 4 seats, but they aren’t very common. Depending on the seat capacity that you require, you should take this into consideration when making your decision.

Off-road go-karts vary tremendously from regular racing go-karts, as they typically have a suspension system, knobby tires and shock absorbers. Not all off-road karts have the same features. Some are equipped with more, some with less. Depending on your intended usage, you should be aware of what features you are looking for. Here are some additional features to look out for.

Last but not least, you should never forget to wear driver safety equipment. This would include at least a proper helmet and gloves. Make sure you wear these at all times!

Age Group

Each go-kart is designed for a specific age group. On the one hand you have off-road go-karts that are typically larger in size, without a speed governor and a higher displacement. These are usually meant for adults who know how to operate an off-road vehicle. Price is of course something personal and everybody has a budget. Get something that you are comfortable with. At the end of the day we judge if something is worth it by deriving its value. How Do I Clean My Off-Road Go-Kart?

Off-road go-karts are made to be durable, as they have to endure all type of terrain and weather conditions. You’ll find it very common for your kart to be dirty after going through sand, mud and water. I suggest cleaning your off-road kart almost immediately after you finish your session. You can do that by simply hosing it down with water and a bit of soap with a cloth. If you don’t do this immediately mud could harden making it harder to clean the next time. 

Is Safety Gear Necessary When Riding in an Off-Road Go-Kart?

Yes, absolutely! When you are off-road go-karting you should always wear the right protective gear. You should get yourself a good helmet and a pair of gloves. Even though your kart may have a roll cage and seat belts, you must always wear protective great.

How Do I Know What Fuel My Off-Road Go-Kart Needs?

Off-road go-karts, regardless if they are 2-stroke or 4-stroke engines will use a form of petrol. This is not the case if your kart is powered by an electric motor. Go-kart engines most commonly run on unleaded petrol. In the US you typically have octane ratings of 87 (regular), 88-90 (mid-grade) and 91-94 (premium). Generally speaking, as long as it’s unleaded it should be appropriate. If in doubt, always check the owner’s manual, where this is usually indicated.

Do I Need to Do Regular Maintenance for My Off-Road Go-Kart?

Generally speaking, off-road go-karts are fairly similar to racing go-karts. They have a motor and other moving parts that can wear and tear over time and therefore need to be maintained.
