10 Best Off-Road Go-Karts in 2021

Off-road go-karting is a thrilling sport where you race on various natural terrains such as sand, mud, rocks, riverbeds or anything else that isn’t a surfaced road. The exhilarating experience of racing along narrow passages, ascending up rocky surfaces and drifting on sand requires a special type of go-kart. These special karts are called off-road go- karts. They are often referred to as dune buggies or off-road buggies, but better word for the term is off-road go-kart.

The main difference between off-road buggies or other off-road vehicles is that they have a specific part called a differential, while an off-road go-kart doesn’t. This allows wheel to turn at different speed, giving them better traction around corners. Any variants of go-karts don’t have a differential, which makes off-road drifting a lot more fun.

Buying Guide: How to Choose Off-Road Go-Karts

As you can tell, there are plenty of off-road go-karts on the market each having its own set of features and benefits. There is no single best off-road go-kart out there and each kart has many different aspects that need to address what is most important for you.

In order to make your purchasing decision easier, I’ve created a list of seven considerations. I’ve listed these aspects below and they will help you make a more informed decision. These aspects include power, seat capacity, features, safety, age group, price and design. Let’s take a look!

Power (Petrol Engine vs Electric Motor)

Off-road go-karts typically come with either a gas-powered engine, or an electric motor. A gas-powered or petrol engine works through internal combustion and requires petrol. Off-road karts with a combustion engine are usually 2-stroke or 4-stroke with a single cylinder that is air-cooled. It’s common to see them having displacements of 80 cc to about 300 cc. While these engines are rather loud, they also emit fumes and can burn petrol quickly. However, compared to electric motors, they do have a range advantage which can be critical for off-road racing, as you aren’t really near any roads or landmarks.

An electric motor on the other hand is usually a brushless motor that requires a power-supply, which is most often a lead-acid battery that is mounted on the frame. The advantage of an electric motor is that you have better weight distribution, as these motors are much lighter compared to petrol engines. They also require less maintenance, have less parts and emit no fumes, therefore being environmentally friendlier. They’re downside is the low range and that’s the reason why you see them more often in smaller off-road karts or for low-power off-road go-karts that are designed for kids. Let’s take a look at the summary below.

petrol go-kart engine

Petrol Engine

  • Works by internal combustion
  • Requires petrol
  • Long range
  • Not environmentally friendly
  • More noise

Electric Motor

  • Usually brushless motors
  • Require lead-acid battery
  • Shorter range
  • Environmentally friendly
  • Very quiet

Seat Capacity

The seat capacity can vary between off-road go-karts. Common seating capacities are 1 Seat, 2 Seats or 4 Seats. You’ll find that off-road karts for kids are usually 1-seaters, whereas youth and adults go-karts are designed with 2 seats. There are also family off-road karts that have 4 seats, but they aren’t very common. Depending on the seat capacity that you require, you should take this into consideration when making your decision.

Features

Off-road go-karts vary tremendously from regular racing go-karts, as they typically have a suspension system, knobby tires and shock absorbers. Not all off-road karts have the same features. Some are equipped with more, some with less. Depending on your intended usage, you should be aware of what features you are looking for. Here are some additional features to look out for.

Off-Road Go-Kart With Roll Cage
Off-Road Go-Kart With Storage Tray

Additional Off-Road Features

  • Tail & headlights
  • Roll cage
  • Roof canvas
  • Storage trays
  • Suspension system
  • Fog lights
  • Speed governor

Safety

You should always take safety as your number one priority. Generally speaking off-road go-karts are equipped with safety features that keep the driver well-protected. Standard safety equipment in any off-road kart should always be a steel frame and a seat belt. You must always ensure that you are strapped in so that if an accident occurs, you remain safely in the kart.

There are other additional safety features that you should look out for. Roll cages help to protect you in case your kart tumbles over. This can be a more common occurrence in off-road karting then regular karting. Roll cages are made of steel and can easily withstand the impact. Smaller off-road go-karts don’t come with a roll cages, as they are too small and are meant for light off-road usage. You may also want to consider head and tail lights, mesh sides, and a good suspension system to absorb any unwanted impact.

Last but not least, you should never forget to wear driver safety equipment. This would include at least a proper helmet and gloves. Make sure you wear these at all times!

Age Group

Each go-kart is designed for a specific age group. On the one hand you have off-road go-karts that are typically larger in size, without a speed governor and a higher displacement. These are usually meant for adults who know how to operate an off-road vehicle. On the other hand, you will also find off-road go-karts with speed governors that are in size, which are meant for kids. And of course, you’ll also find karts for youths that have specifications that fall in-between.  In this guide, I’ve indicated the respective suitable age group for each go-kart for your reference.

You should always check the manufacturer’s specifications for the suitable age and driver requirements. A minimum age is typically recommended and could look like this: “for kids aged 13+”. Make sure to check this before your purchase.

Price

Price is of course something personal and everybody has a budget. Get something that you are comfortable with. At the end of the day we judge if something is worth it by deriving its value. If you are having a hard time determining what budget you want to allocate for an off-road go-kart, ask yourself this: how seriously do you like off-road go-karting and much are you willing to spend on it. With that being said, it will always be a personal decision.

Design

Design is also a personal preference and there are many different factors that you can consider. The most common distinction would be the style or the shape of the go-kart. Some have a bulkier build, others have a broader stance and some even have cool features such as a fenders or modern LED lights. Another design aspect that be important to you is the color. Most off-road go-karts are available in different color variants.

Frequently Asked Questions

Buying an off-road go-kart can be extremely exciting. However, the purchasing decision comes with a lot of considerations and questions. I’ve compiled a list of frequently asked questions that may help you make a better decision. Please get in touch if you would like to have your question added to this list.

How Do I Know Which Off-Road Go-Kart Size I Need to Buy?

In this review list, you will see that I have assigned each kart with a respective age group. Depending on the go-kart’s size and performance some of them may only be suitable for a specific age group. You can always refer to the indication that I’ve mentioned in specification columns above. However, please ensure that you check the exact  specifications such as go-kart size, age and height requirements on the official product page. In most cases, the age group indicated here will suffice, however if you are unsure always check directly with the product listing, or ask the manufacturer directly.

How Do I Clean My Off-Road Go-Kart?

Off-road go-karts are made to be durable, as they have to endure all type of terrain and weather conditions. You’ll find it very common for your kart to be dirty after going through sand, mud and water. I suggest cleaning your off-road kart almost immediately after you finish your session. You can do that by simply hosing it down with water and a bit of soap with a cloth. If you don’t do this immediately mud could harden making it harder to clean the next time.

Is Safety Gear Necessary When Riding in an Off-Road Go-Kart?

Yes, absolutely! When you are off-road go-karting you should always wear the right protective gear. You should get yourself a good helmet and a pair of gloves. Even though your kart may have a roll cage and seat belts, you must always wear protective great.

How Do I Know What Fuel My Off-Road Go-Kart Needs?

Off-road go-karts, regardless if they are 2-stroke or 4-stroke engines will use a form of petrol. This is not the case if your kart is powered by an electric motor. Go-kart engines most commonly run on unleaded petrol. In the US you typically have octane ratings of 87 (regular), 88-90 (mid-grade) and 91-94 (premium). Generally speaking, as long as it’s unleaded it should be appropriate. If in doubt, always check the owner’s manual, where this is usually indicated.

Do I Need to Do Regular Maintenance for My Off-Road Go-Kart?

Generally speaking, off-road go-karts are fairly similar to racing go-karts. They have a motor and other moving parts that can wear and tear over time and therefore need to be maintained. Parts that require regular inspections are the engine, braking system, clutch, tires, electronics, batteries and lights. Be sure to check the owner’s manual for more details.

Do Off-Road Go-Karts Require Assembly upon Delivery?

It depends! Most off-road go-karts are large and bulky. In order to save space, manufacture’s often ship off-road go-karts that are 70% – 90% assembled. This means that sometimes you may need to assemble the wheels, roll cage, and other small items, in order for it to be fully functional. In most occasions the manufacturer will include a detailed instruction manual and in some cases a tool box. Please check this for each individual go-kart, as every manufacturer has different practices. Smaller off-road go-karts, mostly for kids, are shipped fully assembled due to their small size.

Conclusion

I hope this list and guide has helped you make a more informed decision. There are plenty of models in the market and there are many factors that can decide how good an off-road go-kart is. This list will be updated from time to time and I hope that you have enjoyed the read! Happy off-road karting!
